Role Of Calcium Carbonate(CaCO3) In Improving Wear Resistance Of Polypropylene(PP) Components Used In Automobiles

Compounds of Polypropylene (PP) will continue to play as an important materials for automotive applications because of its good mechanical properties including mold ability combined with excellent appearance, colorability ,environmental suitability and high performance at low cost. PP compounds are used in automotive interior parts, instrumental panels, door panels, pillars, Loading platform for light pick-up trucks, battery boxes, indoor carpets. These parts easily porn to wear because of its frequent usage. In this work calcium carbonate(CaCO3) has been blended with PP in different proportions using twin screw extruder machine and tested it in Pin-on-Disc machine for varying load, speed and sliding distance to study its wear characteristics. The wear phenomenon has been investigated and discussed based on wear loss of the material and microstructure of worn surfaces.

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is also widely utilized in the automotive industry due to its cost-effectiveness, availability, and beneficial properties. Here are some specific uses of calcium carbonate in the automotive industry:

1) Plastics and Polymers: Calcium carbonate is extensively used as a filler in the production of automotive plastics and polymers. It enhances the mechanical properties of plastic components, such as bumpers, dashboards, interior trim, and door panels, by improving their rigidity, impact resistance, and dimensional stability.

2) Rubber Products: In the manufacturing of automotive tires and other rubber products, calcium carbonate is used as a reinforcing filler. It improves the tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and durability of rubber components, leading to longer-lasting products.

3) Paints and Coatings: Calcium carbonate is a key ingredient in automotive paints and coatings. It acts as an extender and a pigment, enhancing the paint’s opacity, brightness, and durability. It also helps to reduce costs and improve the overall finish of the vehicle's paintwork.

4) Sealants and Adhesives: Calcium carbonate is used in the formulation of sealants and adhesives for automotive applications. It provides volume, improves consistency, and enhances the adhesive properties, ensuring strong bonds between different materials used in vehicles.
